University of North Carolina Tar Heels Win Second Consecutive FBL Varsity Championship

By  Last updated: 27th April 2011

SEATTLE, WA —Tyler Hansbrough grabbed the T-shirt, the one that said “National Champions,” with as much authority as any rebound that had ever come his way.

Some teams win championships by catching fire during a magic spell in March.

Others win them simply because they’re better than everyone else. North Carolina was that kind of team, and for a second straight year the Tar Heels established themselves as the best team in the nation, this time beating the Middle Beach College Admirals.

Hansbrough and the Tar Heels stomped out Middle Beach College’s second attempt at a national championship by a 69-67 score, in a closely contested game that could have gone either way.

“This is the best way to go out. I couldn’t picture it any other way,” Hansbrough said, choking up, a few minutes after he rushed to grab that first hot-off-the-iron T-shirt.

Hansbrough had a 17/8/1/0/2 line, Wayne Ellington had 16/2/2/0/0, and Ty Lawson, the game’s MVP , finished at 13/8/9/0/0. Now, they and Danny Green can all head to play professionally feeling good about their decision to return to school. They’re bringing home Carolina’s sixth championship, and the third for coach Roy Williams.

Hansbrough, one of the top players in the country last season, never thought twice about returning for his senior year. Ellington, Lawson and Danny Green tested the professional FBL waters but didn’t like what they found. They all came back, none of them wanting their college careers to end with just one title run.

“My hat’s off to these three guys here and the guys in the locker room,” Williams said. “Because they took Roy Williams on one fantastic ride, and it’s something I’ll never forget.”

Middle Beach (26-4) would like to.

The Admirals lost in the 2008 Final Four to Mississippi State, 73-71. They had been on an uplifting run all this year, dominating teams in the FBL Varsity Conference’s regular season, and the final chapter was supposed to be the national championship. It would, the storybook said, bring the definitive ray of sunshine to a Connecticut shoreline town brought low by the collapse of New York’s financial sector.

Instead, the cross-country charter flight home to Madison, Connecticut will be a quiet one.  Once again, Middle Beach has been bested in the postseason by a single basket.

“I think if we played as well as we did the last couple games, we could have had this game,” Middle Beach coach Jason Zieger said. “But Carolina outplayed us, close as it was.”

Sophomore guard Dominique Jones (14/8/7/1/0) was Middle Beach’s top player in the game, and will be one of the building blocks of the team’s future.  Sophomore forward DeJuan Blair, who was a dominant frontcourt presence during the season, finished with a disappointing 14/5/0/1/0 line.  His subsequent announcement that he was declaring for the FBL draft broke the hearts of many Middle Beach College fans.  His departure, as well as those of seniors Jerel McNeal and Sam Young, will break up a team that was ranked #1 for much of the season.

But tonight was North Carolina’s night, and the team will have bragging rights for the next year.
